Ka'ena Point Trail (North Shore)

Category: Hike

Most remote point of Oahu

Looking for a hike to leave you feeling like you've arrived at the edge of the world?  Ka'ena Point Trail will bring you there.  Ka'ena Point is located on the most northwestern corner of Oahu.  From the point, there are breathtaking views of the north and west shores.  One of the very few places on Oahu where you can see two different shore lines simultaneously.  There are two different trails which you may take to access the point.  Here we will cover the northern access.

The trailhead is located about an hour drive north of Waikiki.  If you choose to take the scenic route around the east side of the island it makes for a perfect day trip by motorcycle, scooter or our Polaris Slingshot!  Once you reach the final mile or so of the hike you will pass through a gate and high fenced area.  This is a wildlife sanctuary.  Within the sanctuary you will find albatross, hawaiian monk seals, and if you arrive early in the morning you may also see pods of dolphins just off shore!

Parking

As you reach the absolute end of the Farrington Hwy (930), you will reach a closed gate. Take a right here to enter the parking lot.  If parking is full you can always on the side of the road which you entered.  As always, do not leave valuables in your vehicle and be sure your motorcycle or scooter is properly locked up.

The Trail

Ka'ena Point Trail is a total of 5 miles, down and back.  The trail is relatively flat with only 226 feet of elevation gain and follows the coastline for the entire hike.  There is absolutely no shade on the trail!  Bring a sun hat, sunscreen and plenty of water.  The majority of the trail is hard packed making it an easy walk.  Once you reach the sanctuary, the last part of the hike will be through sand.

The Point

Once you reach the end of the trail you'll find an endless expanse of ocean in front of you.  The currents pull away from the point from both the north and west side of the island which may make you feel like you're being pulled out to sea. You'll also find amazing views of both the north and west shores.  You'll notice just how different the ocean conditions can be on these two shorelines.  We recommend getting to the point near sunset to see an unobstructed view of the sun setting over the pacific ocean.

Wildlife

On top of Ka'ena Point Trail being a great hike, it ends inside of a wildlife sanctuary.  The sanctuary is a nesting ground for albatross, as well as a frequent hang out spot for Hawaiian Monk Seals.  If you arrive early in the morning you may even catch a glips of pods of spinner dolphins.  Always remember to keep your distance from all wildlife.  There are informational signs within the sanctuary if you'd like to learn more about the wildlife.
