Duluth Fall Camping & Hiking

Category: Camping

North East Minnesota Camping

Every year Duluth's fall colors are followed by many tourists who come to soak in this seasonal beauty.  In this adventure we take you on a fall camping trip.  Read on to learn more about recommended camping, hikes, and places to eat.

Fond Du Lac Campground

On this trip we stayed at the Fond Du Lac Campground which is located about 20 miles south west of Duluth on the St. Louis River.  The campground has all the amenities you would expect.  Sites offer full electric, water and sewer hookups. You can also reserve a primitive site if you'd prefer to tent. There are also bathrooms and showers available. This campground has plenty to keep you entertained.  Take advantage of horse shoes, lake access, near by walking paths, as well as a playground for the kids.  Fond Du Lac's sites will accommodate any of our motorhome or travel trailer rentals.  For our trip, we chose to take the Wolf Pup 17JG.  If you'd like you reserve this unit, click the link at the bottom of the page! Split Rock Loop Trail

The split rock loop trail is a very popular trail located 45 minutes north east of Duluth.  You'll find a parking lot right off the road and the trail head starts at a pillar of stacked rocks.  The trail itself is 5.6 miles and moderate in difficulty. There is an almost constant series of smalls rolling hills to climb up followed by long down hill sections.  Hikers can expect the hike to be muddy, and good footwear is highly recommended.  The bridge at the loop section of this trail was out on our visit, so the loop turned into more of an out and back style hike.  This hike pairs nicely with a visit to near by Split Rock Lighthouse.

Grandmas Saloon

No trip to the Duluth area would be complete without a stop to Canal Park.  This area of Duluth juts out into Lake Superior, offering some great views of the lake. While your checking out Canal Park, we recommend stopping into Grandmas Saloon for lunch or dinner. The Canal Park location was Grandma's first ever.  Opened in 1976.  Customers today can expect to enjoy overstuffed sandwiches and burgers, house specialty pasta and wild rice dishes, appetizers include nationally recognized homemade onion rings, chicken wings, and stuffed mushrooms.  On this stop to Grandma's, we enjoyed a fish and chips plate and a seasonal draft beer.

Betty's Pies

Bonus Content!!

After that hike, you may find yourself with a hankering for some pie.  Luckily, Betty's is just down the road! You'll find Betty's 20 minutes south of your hike right off of highway 61.  As the name implies, they've got pies.  What the name may not imply is that these pies are insanely good!  They have everything from the classics to specialty pies.  Buy it by the slice, or the pie.  Hungry for more than just pie?  They also have dine in and take out options.  Their menu includes burgers, sandwiches, soups, salads and of course....pie.
